Hack It – Gold and White Shelves

filed under

During the holidays I sold my Kailo Chic handbags and accessories at a local pop up shop and part of the selling included creating a display for my product. After using the Ikea EKBY BJÄRNUM shelf brackets to make a set of shelves for my guest bathroom, I knew that I wanted a similar look for my display at the show. So I created these gold and white shelves using the same brackets and the white Ikea shelves that go with them. With just a small tweak, I had the prefect shelves for my display and now that the pop up shop is closed, these shelves are making a permanent home in my guest bedroom.

The best thing about these shelves is that you don’t need any special equipment to make them!

Here is what you will need to make 4 shelves:

  • 4 sets of Ekby Bjarnum 7.5″ shelf brackets ($7 per pair)
  • 4 white Ekby Jarpen shelves ($9.99 each)
  • 1/2″ or 3/4″ by at least 36″ square wood dowel rod (available a home supply stores and craft stores)
  • Wood Glue
  • Clamps
  • Metallic Gold Spray Paint ( I used the Valspar brand gold)

If you pick up the dowels at the home supply store, go ahead and get them to cut them down to 28.75″ for you. Otherwise you can cut them at home using a hand saw and miter box. Once you have your wood dowels cut to size, you will begin sanding down the shelf brackets to roughen them up a bit and then wipe them clean. Now you will want to spray paint the brackets and dowels with the gold spray paint and let dry overnight.

Once the paint has had time to dry and cure, run a small bead of wood glue down one side of the wood dowel and clamp it on the edge of the white Ikea shelf (glue side down against the shelf). Make sure to align the dowel along the edge of the shelf so that it is flush. Let dry overnight.

Now that they shelves and brackets are ready, just screw the brackets onto the shelves and hang wherever you see fit.

I love the way just a small strip of gold wood changes the look of these shelves. Such an easy change, but such a big impact.

When installing the shelves in my guest room, I positioned them with two right next to each other in each row. I also added a gold cutout “Hello” sign that I picked up at Hobby Lobby.

While I am a big fan of the gold, don’t feel limited by that color. I think using any fun spray paint color like navy blue, emerald, or even hot pink would make a big colorful impact against the white shelves. Its all in the details as they say!
