Craft It – A Pink Flamingo Pool Float Pencil Cup

filed under

Pardon me while I skip right on past winter and head straight for spring and summer with my crafting. I am so ready for the long warm days of summer and time at the pool that I made this pink flamingo pool float pencil cup to decorate my desk with the help of Flora Craft® Make It: FUN®. It will hopefully get me through the next few months while I wait for the pool water to warm up enough to swim. And I’m going to show you how to make one too. Just in case you need some summer vibes on your desk!

Tell me that is not the cutest thing you have ever seen! And can you believe that it was made from a foam egg and polymer clay?!

The Supplies:

Begin by cutting out a 2″ diameter hole in the egg using the knife leaving about 1/2″ on the bottom. You will also want to cut off the bottom curve of the egg so that it can sit flat. Then use the Smooth Finish and putty knife to coat the egg in a thick layer. Let the Smooth Finish dry overnight.

The next day, use the sanding brick to sand down the Smooth Finish to create an even and smooth coat.

Next bend the floral wire to create the flamingo’s neck and beak. Roll a large piece of clay into a log shape and then fold it around the wire leaving about 3-4″ of wire sticking out the end were it will attach to the egg. You will also want to use the clay to create two large wings. Then bake the clay at 275°F for 15-20 minutes. Once the clay has cooled, glue the neck and wings to the egg using your adhesive.

Once the glue has dried, spray paint the flamingo pink, then use the acrylic paint to paint on the beak and eyes. The final step is to glue the bird to the wood hexagon to help stabilize it.

Okay, I might just be mildly obsessed with this pencil cup. Between it and the ceramic cacti I got at Ikea, my desk is throwing off all sorts of Palm Springs vibes and it makes me so happy! If flamingos aren’t your thing, you can use the same tutorial to make a swan, unicorn, or toucan pool float pencil cup too!

Thank you to Flora Craft® Make It: FUN for sponsoring this post!

I haven't seen that Smooth Finish before – it looks like a handy product! Amusingly, I'm pretty sure my husband would put this in his office if I made him one.

After the smooth finish is dry, you can sand it smooth to remove the fingerprints.
