Make It – Faux Woven Wall Art

filed under

For me, fall is all about textures and yarn and bringing in all the cozy vibes. But, despite my other crafting abilities, knitting and crochet are not my strong suit. I can arm and finger knit, but anything requiring needles or hooks is a no go. But that doesn’t mean I can’t fake the look of woven yarn. I created this ombré faux woven wall art using the most common office supply ever and am going to share my technique with you. Can you guess what I used?

Anyone guess rubber bands? Yep, plain old rubber bands! Crazy how they almost look like chunky woven yarn from far away, huh?

Follow along below for the full tutorial on how you make your own faux woven rubber band wall art.

The Supplies:

Begin by creating your strings of woven rubber bands. Start by crossing two rubber bands to create the initial loop, then place another rubber band through the loops on one end and fold in half. Continue to make a string 20 rubber bands wide (or adjust to make your string long enough to stretch across your frame). Use a pencil to hold the end rubber bands and keep the strands from unraveling while you continue to make all the strands. I ended up needing 31 strands to fill up my frame.

Once your strands are all made, lay them out on a piece of cardboard and remove the pencils. Use your spray paint to paint the rubber bands in an overlapping ombré pattern.

While the paint is drying, add the brass thumb tacks to the frame sides appx. 1/2″ apart. Be sure to leave space so that you can slip the rubber bands between the frame and the tacks.

Once the paint has dried on the rubber bands, gently drape them across the frame and hammer in the tacks to secure the bands. Work your way down until all rubber band strands are hung.

After the faux woven piece was made, I went back and spray painted the rubber bands a bit more to intensify the color a bit more. I just made sure to avoid the edges where the frame was.

The final step is to add metal mounting pieces on each side of the frame and hang it on the wall.

I love the large scale of this piece, but this project can easily be customized to any size, shape or color. Isn’t it just crazy how something as simple as rubber bands can be transformed into something so pretty?
