DIY It – A Simple Hanging Basket Planter

filed under

What can I say? I have become a full fledged plant lady. I have had my outdoor plants and garden for 6+ years now, but I seem to be amassing indoor plants like there is no tomorrow. Something about the pop of greenery brings so much life to our living spaces. Now, I will admit that while I do have quite a few real plants in my home, I am not above using faux greenery in spaces either. As long as you don’t leave it to get dusty, faux greenery still brings in the fresh outdoor feeling without me having to worry about killing them all.

And it’s not just me, you all are loving my planter DIY’s, so I figured I would bring you one more easy way to bring more plants inside. This colorful hanging basket planter is super simple to make and is such a fun pop of color!

Isn’t it just gorgeous?! Once I saw this large basket at Target I was sold, then just a few plants and a bit of painted chain and the planter was ready to hang.

The Supplies:
  • Large colorful basket (Target has a huge collection of colorful baskets right now)
  • Spray painted chain (you will need three pieces that are long enough to reach from your ceiling to the basket at the height you want it to hang. I got mine cut for me at Home Depot)
  • 3 medium carabiners
  • 1 heavy duty screw in hook
  • Plastic liner basket, soil, and plants if using real greenery
  • Faux greenery if taking the fake route
For the chain and carabiners, simply spray paint the chain using a light pink spray paint and let dry. Then hook the chain through the handles of the basket and clip the carabiner to the chain to secure it.

Repeat by threading the other two pieces of chain through the gaps in the basket and hooking it to itself to create a three point hanging basket.
Screw the large hook to the ceiling and hook on the ends of the three pieces of chain. Fill the basket with your plant liner, soil, and plants. Or simply fill it with faux greenery and your done!
I told you I wasn’t kidding when I said it was easy! I may have to a make a few more smaller ones to hang in a little collection here above the credenza. Especially with all the colorful and cute baskets Target has right now.
