DIY It – A Large Gradient Easter Egg Vase

filed under

Apparently I have a thing for vases. This fun fact was news to me until my husband mentioned that I sure do make a lot of vases! Hahahaha! I guess he does have a point. But, well, I couldn’t help but make one more for Easter this year. I mean who doesn’t love a pretty vase filled with flowers? And of course you know I had to pull a little of my favorite gradients in on the action. And before I knew it,  this DIY gradient Easter egg vase was done!

Begin by spray painting bands of color around your egg. I started with yellow at the bottom and worked my way up to blue. But feel free to use any colors you want or shades of the same color. You may need to go back over a few colors once you have the entire egg sprayed to create a more blended look, but just keep spraying until you get the look you want.

Once the paint is dry, use the utility knife to cut out a 3″ circle from the top of the egg. This egg is made of Styrofoam, so it is pretty easy to cut. Cut down into the egg to create a 4″ deep cavity to place your flowers.

If using faux flowers you can stop here and just insert the stems directly into the foam to create your arrangement. If you want to go the fresh flower route, then dig out the foam deeper (until you are about an inch away from the bottom of the egg) and insert a slim bud vase or drinking glass into the carved out space. You can then fill the glass with water and add your fresh flowers.

Hi Kara, since I saw first saw your gradient painting, I am painting whatever I think needs painting or, whoever will stand still long enough. I've got a nice collection of various types of spray paints now. I just love the egg !! What size is it? I am going to the doctor tomorrow and Target is just a hop away. If you get this in time, could you let me know? Thank you so much for sharing your talent. Its just a pleasure to open up your mail, because I know it will cheer me up. With that said, keep them coming.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner! I thought I had already responded, but it looks like it didn't go through! The egg I got was about 10-12" tall and was on the end cap at Target in the crafting section.
