Another super simple Ikea hack coming at you today. After my recent trip to Ikea I loaded up on all the cute but plain pieces I could find with every intention of DIYing the crap out of them. This cake stand was only $7 and had so much potential, so of course it came home with me. All it took was a little spray paint and some shellac and now I have my own custom colored cake stand!
- Clear Glass Cake Stand (this one is from IKEA)
- Spray Paint in gold and the color of your choice (I used Montana Gold Spray Paint)
- Clear Spray Shellac (to help seal the spray paint)
- Plastic Wrap and painter's tape
Begin by taking the cake stand outside and turning the base upside down. Spray paint the under side of the glass base (so that there is no paint on the surface where you put the cake). Once dry, cover the base with plastic wrap leaving just the stem and bottom "foot" exposed. Use the painter's tape to secure the plastic wrap and make sure there are no gaps.
Now spray paint the pedestal part of the stand gold and let dry. Use the plastic wrap to cover the dome of the stand leaving just the knob on top exposed and spray paint that gold too. Once dry, remove the plastic wrap from the base of the stand turn it over and spray paint the entire underside of the stand and the knob portion of the dome with the clear shellac. This will seal the spray paint onto the glass and give it a nice shiny finish.
Once the shellac has cured, your colorful cake stand is ready to fill with treats!
These would be super cute for Easter desserts or even at a wedding in several different colors and each containing a different cake! I seriously love how easy it is to transform things with a little bit of spray paint! Don't you?!
