Drink It – A Moroccan Mule

filed under

Special thanks for Cost Plus World Market for sponsoring this post. All opinions and recipes are my own.

By this point, most people know about the Moscow Mule cocktail. At least here in Austin you can’t go to a restaurant or bar without seeing a version on the menu. If you aren’t familiar with it, it is basically vodka, ginger beer (a non alcoholic strong ginger ale), and lime served over ice in copper mugs. It is actually my husbands favorite drink! So needless to say we have tasted quite a few different versions over the last few years, so when Cost Plus World Market asked me to create a Moroccan inspired cocktail, I knew right away that I wanted to make. A Moroccan mule!

Traditional Moroccan flavors of mint and lemon were substituted for the lime to create a herb-y cocktail that paired well with vodka and strong peppery ginger flavor. And of course since this is a Moroccan Mule, I decided to forgo the traditional copper Moscow mule mugs for a something with a more Moroccan flair, and these gold accented Moroccan tea glasses were perfect!

To make your cocktails you will need the following from World Market:

Begin by muddling 2-3 mint leaves in the bottom of your glasses.

Next, fill your glasses with ice, and then add one shot of vodka, a splash of Torani mint julep syrup, 1 tablespoon of ginger cordial, the juice from half a lemon, and a splash of soda water to each glass.

Once your drink is poured, use a swizzle stick to mix the flavors, then garnish with more fresh mint, lemon peel curls, or a slice of lemon pickle for an even more traditional Moroccan touch. If you are not familiar with lemon pickle it is essentially boiled lemon that is then sliced and placed in a jar with salt and lemon juice and left to pickle for a week. For this cocktail I made my own with a 50/50 mixture of sugar and salt for a more sweet/salty lemon garnish.

I have to say that I am more of a fan of this Moroccan take on the mule than the traditional. That hint of mint and lemon pair so well with the ginger. And this concentrated ginger cordial is so tasty!

This sounds amazing. I've not seen Belvoir's ginger cordial but The Fresh Market sells their elderflower and rose elderflower lemondade which is fantastic with gin.
