DIY It – A Typography Vase

filed under

I, like many 20-30 year old women in the US, am a little bit obsessed with Target and all the fun, colorful, home decor pieces they always seem to be churning out. It’s even my dream to one day design my own collection for Target. Kailo Chic for Target has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? (In case anyone from Target ever reads this, go ahead and give me a call! Hint, hint.)
Among my favorite things Target has created recently is the entire Oh Joy! for Target line. I love that Joy Cho isn’t afraid of color and pattern and she is definitely a women after my own colorful, gold loving, graphic designing heart. And her OK vase is just so cute and gold and I love it. But how much fun would it be to customize the vase with any word or phrase you want? That was the inspiration behind today’s DIY. This typography vase can be easily customized to spell out any word (MOM, Love, Party, etc…) and it can be made the colors that fit your theme. How awesome is that?!

By using craft store cardboard letters I was able to spell out any word I wanted to make my own colorful typography vase (I went with YAY because it’s a palindrome and can be put in the middle of a table and viewed from all sides). But since the letters are made with cardboard, this vase can only be used with faux flowers and plants. Not to worry though, because as you can see, there are so many realistic looking faux flowers out there that you won’t really miss the real thing.

The Supplies:

You will begin by using the X-acto knife to cut the tops of the letters out to give your vase and opening for flowers.

Once they are cut out, you will want to pull out the internal cardboard pieces so that you have room inside for your flower stems.

Once you have the tops of every letter cut out and the internal pieces of cardboard removed, it’s time to paint your letters. I like the Americana by Decoart acrylic craft paint because it has great coverage and dries to a nice smooth matte finish. For my “YAY” vase I used orange, coral, and pink for the front and back of the letters and metallic gold for the sides.

Once the letters were painted and dried, it was time to glue my letters together to create my vase. I simply used a thin line of glue at the top and bottom sides of each letter to affix them to each other.

Once the glue was dry, it was time to fill my vase with tons of succulents and flowers.

What other words would you spell out? I could see doing a LOVE vase for Valentine’s day or Mom for Mother’s Day. How about an EAT one in the kitchen. Really there are no limits on the fun combinations of words and colors you could use to create your own vase. If you do happen to make your own vase, please share it with me on social media using the tag #mykailochic so that I can see it!
