DIY It – Sand Art Decor

filed under

I know what you might be thinking. Sand art? Really? Well, I’m here to tell you that sand art isn’t just for kids anymore. I was originally inspired by Sugar and Cloth’s sand art sugar scrub (how fun is that by the way?), then I came across AwwSam’s take on a sand art cake (yes please!), and I was hooked. The bright colors and modern take on sand art got my head spinning with possibilities. Today I want to share with you an easy way to make your own colored “sand” (it’s really salt) and transform it into the perfect summer decor.

See what I mean?! Gorgeousness! Now again, I am partial to ALL THE COLORS, but you could easily adapt these to shades of blue or pink or even just black and white. Go for whatever fits your decor best. And the process could not be simpler, you just need salt and some sidewalk chalk!

The Supplies:

Begin by simply grating the chalk into a cup or more of salt. The more chalk you grate, the deeper the color. Then just mix the two together to get your perfect shade.

Once I mixed each color, I put it in a ziploc bag to keep it contained. Just look at all the pretty colors!

Now channel your inner kid and layer the colored salt into your glasses anyway you like.

Once you have all the colors layered in to your liking, use the gold paint pen to add a gold rim to the top of the glass for that extra gold touch!
Now simply add in your pillar candles or faux air plants and place were ever you see fit. I think several of these grouped together as a summer table centerpiece would be so pretty!
But I am also partial to the air plant terrarium look, which is how these are currently displayed on my mantel.
So, what do you think? Want to give grown up sand art a try? Sure you do!
