Decorate It – Rainbow Shelf Styling

filed under

When I decided to decorate my built-ins like a rainbow, I wasn’t 100% sure I would have enough of a decor-spectrum to pull it off (an earth-shattering problem, I know).  To my surprise (not really), I had more than enough to create a color-cascade with varying shapes and textures.

Let’s investigate closer, shall we?

First up is the red/pink side. I used a few red and pink books I’ve collected over time (who says you can’t judge a book by it’s cover; it’s pink and I want it!), a red box from Sugar Paper for Target’s holiday collection, my DIY neon footed terrarium, myYAY typography vase, and a few odds and ends from Home Goods.

In the orange section, I have a few more books, my other neon footed terrarium, my color block mother’s day art I made, a gold vase filled with faux flowers from Joann fabric and craft stores, abstract art prints by Britt Bass, and a few more pieces from Home Goods.

Anchoring the middle section is our sad/old mini-tv. With every picture it’s in, it gets one step closer to being replaced. Anyway, here I have a few more books, a yellow Moroccan patterned candle, photo frame, terrarium, green candle, and mini candle hurricane from Target, and other pieces from Home Goods. Can you see the pattern here?

In the blue and purple section, there are a few more pieces from the same same few places. Apparently I do all my shopping at Home Goods, Target, or World Market. Maybe I should branch out more? Suggestions?

What do you think of the rainbow built-ins? Too much or just right? I’m really loving it and think that it might be my favorite yet. It was fun to do and a good opportunity to mix-in a lot of the DIY project-objects that I’ve created recently. I think I’ll keep it. Well, at least until fall.

Thanks so much Michelle! I am not sure why I hadn't thought about doing it before. But it is definitely my favorite way that I have styled my shelves. BTW your wood monogram planter is AMAZING!

I'm trying to figure out where I can put more bookshelves in my house so I can replicate this, but I'm running out of space! 😉 It is perfectly beautiful and you did a great job!

[…] These days some of us have a lot more time on our hands, while others are juggling way too many tasks and just trying to keep the house in order. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, consider organizing by color, at least for some of your items. For starters, it’s something that design lovers can appreciate because it’s aesthetically beautiful. There’s nothing like a rainbow bookshelf to motivate you to get those books and decorative items sorted and displayed! It can also be truly helpful, especially when it comes to supplies such as arts and crafts items. Did we mention that it’s kid-friendly?!
