Sew It – A Pretty Printed Sunglasses Case

filed under

Learn how to make these simple sunglasses cases for Mother's Day or any time really. Great begining sewing project.
With Mother’s day approaching, I’ve been trying to think of some great gifts. I love creating something handmade, so I settled on a glasses case. I’m a bit of a sewing nut (my floor full of thread pieces can attest to this), but I know it isn’t for everyone. However, this sunglasses case is the perfect beginner project. And I know there are a ton of moms who are in desperate need of a pretty, padded, and printed glasses case. So what are you waiting for? Follow along for the full tutorial on making one of these cute little cases for mom (or yourself if you just can’t bare to part with it)!

The Supplies
  • 1/4 yard of printed exterior fabric (I found all of these amazing prints in the Home Decor fabric section at Joann Stores)
  • 1/4 yard lining fabric (Again, from Joann Stores in their bottom weights section)
  • 1/4 yard of fusible fleece
  • 18 pt sewing needle
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine, thread, and scissors

The great thing about this pattern is you can make 3-4 cases out of the 1/4 yard of fabric and lining. If you do want to make that many however, you’ll want to double the fusible fleece.

Begin by tracing a circular bowl appx. 8-9″ in diameter onto your fabric. This will be your pattern. Once you have it traced out, go ahead and cut your fabric. You’ll need 1 outer fabric, 1 lining, and 2 fusible fleece circles per sunglasses case.

Once your circles are cut, layer the pieces together and cut a simple “dip” out of the circle (like a very subtle Pac-Man:). If you don’t trust yourself to freehand this step, you can use a small kids bowl or pint glass to trace the dip and then cut it out. Now iron the glue side of the fusible fleece to the fabric. One will be ironed to the back of the lining and one to the back of the outer fabric. You will end up with something like this:

Now put your right sides together and pin the outer and lining fabrics together.

Sew the pieces together leaving a 2″ wide opening on the main circle edge of the fabric.

Turn the fabric inside out and iron flat.

Then fold the opening edges inside and top stitch the opening closed. Now you will want to fold the fabric in half to create the case and pin the sides together. You’ll have a sort of taco shape with a bite out of it. Delicioso!

The final step: top stitch the case around the edge to form the pocket. I started my stitch right where the bite ended close to the purple pin and stitched all the way around the top until I got to the bottom corner. Trim the threads and you’ll have a cute little case for your mom to store her sunglasses just in time for summer!
