Decorate It – Using Adhesive Vinyl on Tablecloths

filed under

I started setting up my Mother’s Day brunch table by using my standard, go-to, white table cloth as my base. But as I layered on the plates, place-mats, and flatware, I realized that the plain white table cloth was a little too, well, plain white. That’s where the magic of adhesive vinyl from Expressions Vinyl comes in. I used both their adhesive glitter coral and adhesive gold to create a unique temporary tablecloth design that helped tie the tablecloth into my brunch table setting as well as provide place cards for each guest. Then when the party was done, I could easily remove the vinyl and have my plain white table cloth back and ready to decorate for my next party!

Since I already had a lot going on on the table, I went with simple triangles for the tablecloth print. But think how easy it would be to switch out the design to suit your party theme. Graduation hats in the school colors for a graduation party? Or even Class of 2016? Or how about little dog bones for a kids Paw Patrol Party? Or palm leaves for a classy Palm Springs themed party? The possibilities really are endless, and since the vinyl is only temporarily stuck to the table cloth, you easily remove the designs after the party and it will be ready to use for your next party theme. Follow along as I show you how to use the adhesive vinyl to decorate your own tablecloth.

The Supplies:

Begin by deciding on your design. I went with equilateral triangles both for simplicity and because I have a thing for triangles! I sized my triangles to appx. 1.25″ and arranged them in my cutting program to get the most triangles I could out of one sheet of vinyl. Then I cut out my design. Surprisingly it only took one sheet of 12″ by 12″ vinyl to cover my entire 108″ long table cloth with triangles! So not only is this process temporary, at only $1+ per sheet of vinyl, it is much more affordable then buying new tablecloths for every party.

Now that I had my vinyl cut out, I weeded away the negative space and was left with a page full of tiny adhesive vinyl stickers that I just peeled off and stuck to the table cloth in a random pattern.

Doesn’t the table just look so much cuter with the little triangles all over?

For an extra special touch, use a small piece of gold adhesive vinyl to cut out the names of the guests on your vinyl cutter and weed away the negative space so that all that is left is the names in gold. Now cut the paper backing to separate the names and then cut a piece of the transfer paper in the same size as each name. Peel away the paper backing from the transfer paper and stick to the vinyl name cutout.

Rub the transfer paper well with your hands to make sure the vinyl adheres to the transfer paper and peel away the vinyl paper backing. Now place your transfer paper (with vinyl name attached) on the tablecloth above the place setting and rub the transfer paper so that the vinyl name sticks to the tablecloth and then carefully remove the transfer paper. The vinyl name should now be stuck on the table letting each guest know where to sit!

Now that wasn’t so bad was it? And you can see how this simple idea can easily be modified to fit the party you are having. I already mentioned the different ways you can change up the design (graduation hats, dog bones, palm leaves), but you can even use the word cut-outs to label dishes on the table if you are having a buffet! Cucumber salad here, rosemary rolls there, etc…

I hope you enjoyed learning a new way to use vinyl to decorate for a party. I also wanted to say thank you to Expressions Vinyl for supplying me with the vinyl that I used for this tutorial and for compensating me for my time and crafty abilities. And thank you for supporting our sponsors and helping keep this little blog running!
