Bake It – Swirled Soft Pretzels for Halloween

filed under

I have mentioned before that I am a carb girl, more specifically a bread girl. I can’t seem to say no to fresh warm bread and my go to soft pretzel recipe is always my downfall. Delicious, delicious downfall. These pretzels are the perfect bit of salty and buttery and the dough has just a slight bit of sweetness that makes them irresistible to me. For Halloweens of years past I have made this pretzel dough into knobbly witches fingers with almond nails, but for this Halloween, I decided to do something different and color my dough and then marble it to create Halloween colored swirls throughout my soft pretzels.

Just look at those golden brown soft and salty pretzels! My mouth is watering just looking at them!
And here is the inside when you cut them open. How fun!

Halloween swirled deliciousness! To make your own you will need to make your pretzel dough base and let it rise once. I use this recipe
from Yammie’s Noshery and it works amazingly every time.

Once you have your once risen dough, punch it down and divide it into three (or more if you want more colors) balls. Add your food coloring to the center of each ball and knead it to distribute the color. I only worked the color in a bit to get a more marbled look.

Combine all your dough balls and form into one giant ball, place back in your greased bowl, cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

Once you have let your dough rise for the second time, go ahead and preheat your oven to 450°F and begin to shape your pretzels. Divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a long skinny snake like so.

Then shape the long strip of dough into a pretzel shape, dip into your (1/3 cup baking soda, 3 cups warm water) mixture and place on some parchment paper on your baking sheet. Sprinkle the top with some coarse sea salt or kosher salt. Repeat with the remaining dough pieces until all your pretzels are formed.

Now bake at 450°F for 7-11 minutes or until golden brown. Once you remove them from the oven, coat them with melted butter and then enjoy!

Please do try this recipe and let me know what you think. I love this dough recipe and use it for everything! Pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, pecan buns, you name it! It really is super easy to make and delicious to eat.
