Succulent Planters

Lately I have been inspired by succulents. They come in such beautiful shapes and colors, and they lend themselves well to neglect which is always a plus in my book. My sister recently started to make little succulent planters and has been doing well selling them. Some of the ideas she came up with are so clever, that I started to think of other ways to create little succulent gardens and arrangements.  I have seen them as wreaths, planted into table cutouts, and made into wall art. Below are a few of the ideas that I have had, and what I have discovered is that the sky is the limit when it comes to planters for these little plants.

First we have the traditional cup planters, but in a variety of colors and shapes. In order for the succulents to not get water logged in these solid bottom cups, I filled about an inch of the bottom with small pebbles, then in when the cactus dirt and the succulents.

Next, I thought small and came up with pretty tea cups and egg dishes. Think beautiful floral type tea cups with little succulents. Perfect for that English Garden themed wedding or to decorate your table at your next Tea Party. Cute, Cute!

Now for an “exotic” take on the planters, I spray painted some of my daughters unloved plastic animals and cut a hole in their back. These little guys are the perfect size for small succulent cuttings since the plants love small cramped spaces. Don’t forget to cut a little drainage hole in the bottom of the animal to let excess water out.

Next I took a plain serving tray or dish that had about a 1-2″ lip around the edge and created a wonderful succulent assortment inside. Again, I added the pebbles to the bottom, then some cactus dirt for good drainage. Then I just filled it in with different shapes, textures, and colors of succulents. In the spaces between the plants I put some moss, little pebbles, and some green colored nut shells. I think this is tied for my favorite, it is quite the centerpiece.

Last of all, I took two small birdcages that I found that Michael’s craft store and used them to plant some more succulents. For the larger birdcage I used the moss to surround the sides and bottom of the bird cage and then in the center I just placed the succulent in the plastic container that it came in. This will help contain the dirt in the birdcage, but it will be hidden by all the moss. I closed the lid of the birdcage and gently pulled the longer pieces of the succulent through the openings. I also tucked a few small fake flower blossoms into the moss to add a little color.

For the small birdcage I just used the moss to make a little bed for the dirt. I then planted a tiny succulent clipping into the dirt and and voila, a tiny birdcage planter!

Like I said at the beginning, the sky is the limit when it comes to what you can use to plant succulents. I hope you find some inspiration to try your own little succulent plantings.
